Day 1: Step To This
Let’s Talk About…
Some things about this song…
Oddisee’s Rock Creek Park is one of my favorite beat albums ever…(go check it if you don’t know it)
The sonics are different, but some of the vibe of this reminds me of the vibe of that record. I think it’s because hearing this immediately brings about an image of being outside or walking through a park and feeling good about feeling good.
It’s kind of a short little tune, so it may not get you all the way to 10,000 steps on your daily walks, but if you walk fast, maybe it’ll take care of 2,000 steps.
Here’s how the beat came to be:
I started out by tapping out a drum loop on the Ableton Push2. Then I felt around on the piano until these chords came. To complete the “tripod” of the beat, I came back around on the P Bass. If you listen, you can hear that I’m thumbing the notes and palm muting to keep that staccato feel. In this particular case I think it helps keep things spaced out rhythmically. There are a couple guitar parts. One is following the bass, and the other is sneaking some chord slides here and there. I think was just trying to keep it pretty open so that you can let that piano riff hang in the air while the drums hit.
